KUU -Husks of Light-", presented at SaloneSatellite 2025, is a series of lights constructed using 0.03mm transparent washi paper, traditionally used in the restoration of ancient documents, this sculptural lighting installation explores fragility and spatial perception.
「KUU -Husks of Light-」は、2025年のサローネサテリテで発表される、灯りのシリーズです。古文書の修復に伝統的に使用される典具帖紙という0.03mmの透明な和紙を用いて構築された、儚さと空間の知覚を探求する彫刻的な照明のインスタレーションです。
Generally, washi paper has long fibers that allow light to pass through softly, which is why it has been used for lighting since ancient times. In this work, the washi paper, now as thin as a membrane, seems to embrace the light—or even the very air that is illuminated. This layering brings forth the perception of space, with depth softly glowing.
To make the thin and lightweight washi paper self-supporting, two methods were employed: one involves adhering the paper along a steel linear frame, while the other uses a papier-mâché technique to shape the paper into a 3D form. This process combines industrial techniques with craftsmanship.
The perception of space brought by layering of transparency is inspired by the voids in architecture, such as courtyards or atriums. It is a lighting installation that evokes a delicate, bodily sensation, triggered only by fragility.
一般的に、和紙は繊維が長く、光を柔らかく通すため、昔から灯りに用いられてきました。今回、その和紙を分解するように、皮膜ほどの薄さとして空間に重ね、光に纏わせることを試みました。皮膜ほどの薄さとなったそのシェードは、奥行きをみせながら、光る空気そのものをはらんでいるように知覚させます。
今回、この薄くて軽い和紙を自立させるために用いた方法は、1つはスチールの線形フレームに障子のように貼り込む方法、もう1つは張り子のように紙を木型に貼り合わせて立体を形成する方法です。工業的な手法とクラフト的な手法の掛け合わせで実現されてます。
透明感のある繊細な重なりが生み出す空間の知覚は、建築におけるvoid（空間）、例えば中庭や吹き抜けにインスピレーションを受けています。"かげろうの羽"とも呼ばれる典具帖紙の儚さが、繊細で身体的な感覚を呼び起こす照明のインスタレーションです。
